1) Selio Earns First 2008 Victory with F1 China

Shenzhen, China - Defending World Champion Sami Selio put together a weekend he was hoping for by winning a thrilling 1.77 second victory over Jay Price of the Qatar Team and moving up to 3rd place in the championship at the 6th round of the 2008 U.I.M. F1 World Championship.

While the sold out crowd stood on their feet for most of the race the Woodstock Red Devil Racing Team driver held the point as pressure mounted from the driver from New Orleans, Louisiana who now has moved 36 points in front of the pack with just 40 points still remaining in this season's championship. The driver known for over 25 years as the "Ragin Cagin" did his level best to push for the win despite having a severe trim problem that limited his use of getting the most speed out of the DAC boat.

Team Abu Dhabi driver Ahmad Al Hameli reached the podium for the third time this season when he finished a strong 3rd place 4.32 seconds behind the leader at the end. Despite getting on a severe learning curve by switching from his injured BABA boat to a DAC he still has moved up to 4th in the driver's championship. Swedish driver Jonas Andersson came home a quiet fourth place in his F1 Team Sweden DAC boat.

2) Feature Article "Why is it 'Starboard' and 'Port'?"

Starboard is the nautical term that refers to the right side of a vessel as perceived by a person on board a vessel and facing the bow (front).

In the primitive days of navigation, the helmsman stood at the stern of the ship, controlling the vessel's direction by hand with a rudder (kind of a specialized oar), which was on the right side and called a steer board - in Anglo-Saxon the steorbord - so... "starboard" (. The left side of the ship is called the "port" side because with the steering mechanism on the right, it was the only side that could be brought to rest against a harbour or port, so as to prevent the steering boards from being crushed.

Once the modern centerpost rudder was developed, it was no longer necessary to dock with the vessel's portside to port. It is also interesting to note that the port/starboard practice carried over into aviation. Even today, passengers almost always enter planes from the left, or port, side even though aircraft now have full sized doors on both sides.

3) Seebold/Tomlinson win Superboat Unlimited Championship

Outboard tunnel boat and offshore world champion Mike Seebold of Marco Island, Fla., and legendary throttleman John Tomlinson piloted the 50-foot Mystic Bud Light to win the Superboat Unlimited World Championship. The team held two firsts and a second to cinch the Championship. Mike DeFrees of Vancouver, Wash., and Jeff Harris of Greenville, NC, piloted Team CRC, a MTI catamaran powered by twin Mercury Racing 1200 SCi race engines coupled with Mercury Racing dry-sump Six drives, placed second with a total of 975 championship points, or 50 points behind Seebold and Tomlinson. CMS and Cintron rounded out third and fourth place.

4) Tim Seebold Wins Final ChampBoat Grand Prix of Naples

Tim Seebold of Osage Beach, Mo., driving a Mercury 2.5 EFI Champ race outboard-powered tunnel race boat of his own design, won the inaugural Grand Prix of Naples on LakeAvalon in Naples, Fla., Sunday, Nov. 2. The 60-lap race was the sixth and final round of the 2008 F1-ChampBoat Series. Seebold led from pole to the flag, taking his second straight victory of the season, winning by 3.6 seconds over Shaun Torrente of Miami, Fla.

Torrente needed to finish four places in front of series-points leader Terry Rinker of Tampa, Fla., to take the title. Torrente, running a leased stock powerhead from the on-site Mercury Racing race support trailer, battled Seebold and Rinker – both of whom run modified Mercury 2.5 EFI Champ race outboard power. Torrente’s driving talent, combined with pure guts and a drive to win, kept him in the running and thousands of fans on their feet as he nearly passed Seebold with eight laps to go.  A fourth place finish was all Terry Rinker needed to capture his fourth F1-ChampBoat series title.

5) Vella confirmed 2008 Australian Formula 1 champion

Sydney, Australia’s Shane Vella has been confirmed as the 2008 Australian Formula 1 champion after the final round was fought out at Southport’s Marine Stadium on the Gold Coast.

Vella had actually gathered enough points to win the title without competing at the Gold Coast, but to his credit (and that of his crew) he wanted to go out on top. Taking it relatively easy at times, Vella’s bright yellow Seebold hull carrying the #61 scored two seconds and a fourth before starting celebrations on the title win.  It was Vella’s second national crown; he won the Australian Formula 1 title in 2003, in his first year of F1 racing.

The weekend’s Formula 1 racing belonged to Rhys Coles (Byron Bay Premium Ale) who led the field home to the chequered flag in all three races.
