1) Dubai announces sponsorship of UAE'S F1 powerboat racing team

Dubai Holding has announced that it will sponsor the Emirates Team for the Formula One Powerboat Racing World Championships.

The Emirates team is owned and managed by the Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club. It currently holds the title of World Champion for the F1 World Powerboat Championship, having won the highly prized title in 2004. For the 2005 F1 World Powerboat Racing Championship, the UAE will field two drivers. They include UAE national Thani Al Qumzi, with his boat No. 28. Al Qumzi is ranked 7th amongst 24 pilots. The other driver is Scott Gillman with his boat No. 27. Gillman is a winner of the Triple Crown for most accumulated points.

The UIM Formula 1 World Championship will begin the 2005 season in Portugal with the 7th Annual Grand Prix of Portugal. The championship rounds will continue around the world into December, to reach the UAE on 9th December in Abu Dhabi, and on 16th December 2005 in Sharjah.

3) Jesse James outguns series winner in Australia

Despite being named after a legendary American outlaw, veteran offshore powerboat Jesse James couldn't steal the overall title off Placemakers on Tauranga Harbour as the national series finished.

South Auckland brothers Wayne and Grant Valder won the eighth round of the national championships in their 30-foot, 1300hp Chris Craft-designed catamaran Jesse James. They could have taken the national title but needed series leader Placemakers (Richard Shores-Wayne Carson) to finish at least four boats behind on Saturday. Despite struggling with a speed for much of the race, Shores drove a strategic race to take second, giving the Auckland merchant banker his fifth national title in six years, moving ahead of offshore legends Graeme Horne and Peter Turner.

Built in the United States for property developers from Missouri, the boat was the result of more than US$1 million ($1.24m) in research and development by Craft and Mercury Marine. Launched in 1983, she won the American offshore series in '84 and '85, setting a world record with an average speed of 101.8mph in a 150-mile race and winning the world championship.

5) Cougar Custom Boats Sold

Cougar Custom Boats, formerly of British Columbia, Canada was recently sold to partners Tony Poore and Bernie Shumate who are establishing the companies home in Hill City, Kansas. The company has had a great reputation for building high-end, high-performance tunnel boats. It is suspected that the recent Canadian/American monetary exchange rate and the cost of shipping has made things more difficult during the past few years.

We understand that the new owners intend to continue building the quality of boats that Cougar has been known for, and that new designs are forthcoming. A "party deck" model is in the works based on the popular Cougar 27-cat boat as well as a 35-foot express cruiser and a tunnel hull bass boat.

6) FEATURE - US universities develop innovations

Researchers at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee have embedded graphite into aluminum to produce a lightweight, self-lubricating material that can be used in engines. Standard aluminum pistons and cylinders can stick together during a cold-engine startup or when an engine needs oil. But if the parts are made from aluminum-graphite, the engine is partially protected from seizing.

Mercury Marine has patents on high-strength aluminum alloys for use in outboard engines and boat-engine drives. They have developed a propeller blade that can be severely bent without breaking. Any time we can take a heavy steel part and make it out of aluminum, we are saving a lot of weight. The Navy wants better steel for its new fleet. Steel, an alloy of iron, carbon and various other elements and metals, gets its strength mainly from nanosized particles of copper. There is just no telling where we'll see the next performance powerboating benefit of these technological innovations.

Note: The articles presented in TBPNews are edited excerpts from the "Secrets of Tunnel Boat Design" book, by Jim Russell, published by AeroMarine Research. The STBD book explains the theory in full, and outlines example design calculations, step-by-step. The "Tunnel Boat Design Program", software, does all the force calculations, dynamic force balances at all speeds, and reports the analysis automatically, including complete graphical performance results for any tunnel or modified vee hull design.
