3) Cappellini Sets New World Speed Record!

256,25 km/h on a 1 Km course on Lake D'Iseo. - SARNICO, Italy - Eight time World U.I.M. F1 World Champion Guido Cappellini set an all-time speed record for the Formula 1 class by powering his TAMOIL DAC Mercury powered boat to a 256 kilometers (158mph) time in two combined runs on Lake D'Iseo in northern Italy on Friday29 April, 2005.

The native of nearby Como, broke the all-time mark set by Great Britain's Allan Marshall that was set back in 2002 with a speed of 234,8 km/h and stood for almost three years. Cappellini, who with the generous cooperation with his main sponsor TAMOIL put together a pair of runs through the 1 kilometer course that was set up on the north side of the lake under ideal no wind conditions.

With the guidance and officials of the Italian Motor boating Federation in attendance, Guido made two official runs. The first timed out just over 258 km/h being the quickest of the two, while running back towards the western part of the lake on his 2nd lap he did a slower 253 km/h attempt, but the combined effort was easily enough to set a new official world U.I.M mark.

5) Little hydros irritate anglers

OKEY POINT, WA - Del Snyder loves paddling his pontoon boat on Twin Lakes, flicking a favorite hand-tied fly into the fishing hole. That serenity has been washed away by dozens of miniature boats that have buzzed across the surface.

The miniature RC racing boat enthusiasts have been using Gissberg Twin Lakes County Park for 25 years, though usually they use the north lake. This year Snohomish County decided to put the miniature boat races on the south lake, where adults such as Snyder usually fish.

Snohomish County parks and recreation say they have a licensed agreement to use the lake on 10 different occasions during the year. The boat racers only use half of the lake, leaving the other half for anglers fishing from shore. The county doesn't allow anglers or anyone else to launch nonmotorized boats on the lake during races for fear they will get hit by the 5- to 10-pound boats that can buzz at speeds up to 70 mph.

On Saturday morning, the miniature boat racers put up about 20 tents on a bank off the parking lot at the south lake. An announcer's voice blasted from speakers, blending in with the revs of gasoline-burning motors.

Note: The articles presented in TBPNews are edited excerpts from the "Secrets of Tunnel Boat Design" book, by Jim Russell, published by AeroMarine Research. The STBD book explains the theory in full, and outlines example design calculations, step-by-step. The "Tunnel Boat Design Program", software, does all the force calculations, dynamic force balances at all speeds, and reports the analysis automatically, including complete graphical performance results for any tunnel or modified vee hull design.
