1) Powerboater Mark Rotharmel Inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame

February 2005, Toronto - On January 29th, thirteen Canadian racing greats were inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame at a black-tie gala held in Mississauga, Ontario. Former F1 powerboat driver Mark Rotharmel was one of them.

The Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame was established to honour and recognize the achievements of those who have made significant contributions to Canadas rich and colourful motorsport history. The inductees were selected by a panel of racing and automotive journalists from across the country who review each nominee presented for that year. Each inductee was chosen based on their contribution to the sport within their particular discipline.

Since its inception in 1993, more than 110 people have been inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame including Greg Moore, Scott Goodyear and the legendary Gilles Villeneuve. Prior to Rotharmel, only four powerboat racers had been honoured, with Guy Lombardo, the famed bandleader and hydroplane ace amongst them.

Arguably the most recognized modern-era Canadian of his sport, Rotharmel is respected throughout the world in racing and performance circles for his success on the International Formula One Powerboat circuit, and more recently for his global television celebrity.

Rotharmel competed for 17 years as a Canadian Boating Federation member in sanctioned CBF and American Power Boat Association Outboard (APBA) Sportscraft/Outboard Performance Craft races. From 1974 through 1979, Mark raced for Mercury in the Unlimited Outboard categories of the sport, ultimately becoming its lead Canadian driver with countless victories, two speed records and seven major North American titles. When Mercury withdrew from factory team participation in 1980, Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC) approached Rotharmel to race with them, which led to another two back-to-back Canadian Championships.

In 1984, a World Championship F1 Grand Prix circuit was formed within the Union of International Motorboating (UIM). Mark was the only Canadian F1 driver licensed to compete on this 9-country tour. Mark was one of the first drivers in the world to be strapped into a 150 mph, 1200 lb. race boat following a wrath of fatalities which struck the sport. In 1985, he capped off a spectacular year by winning the 1985 North American Mod U Championship and set the fastest recorded average lap time recorded on Picton, Ontarios famed Gold Cup course at 116 mph.

Upon retiring from F1 powerboat competition at the age of 33, Rotharmel transitioned from Canadas most prominent boat racer to North Americas voice of performance boating. As a co-host for Power Boat Television which aired on Speed Channel until 2003, Mark Rotharmel became a household name to performance and racing fans.

4) MTI wins Kiekhafer innovation award

Marine Technology Inc. of Wentzville, Mo., received the 2004 E.C. Kiekhaefer Memorial Award last week during the Miami International Boat Show. The award was created after Kiekhaefers death in October 1983 to recognize offshore racing innovation in his style. It is presented for technical innovation which advances the marine engineering art, improves offshore racing, and is proven in the most recently concluded racing season.

For 2004 Fred Kiekhaefer (son of E.C.), presented the award to Marine Technology president Randy Scism. Scism and Marine Technology earned the award for their exceptional creativity in the world of offshore. MTI catamarans finished first, second and third in the Key West Offshore Racing World Championships in Superboat Cat/OSS Cat class. Todd Werners Pro Marine, with dry-sumped Mercury Racing Six drives, was first, with Team Virgin and Nichols Offshore in second and third, respectively.

5) New Wireless helm control system

Owners of sports boats can now control their vessels wirelessly, even away from the helm, using a new Raymarine wireless autopilot system with built-in ZigBee-ready networking technology from Ember.

Raymarine, the world leader in marine electronics, debuted at the 2005 Miami International Boat Show the industrys first wirelessly controlled autopilot, the SmartPilot S1000. Designed for hydraulic powerboats up to 25 feet, the Raymarine wireless autopilot system is a significant technological advance for boating control, safety and enjoyment. Embedded with Embers ZigBee-ready wireless chips and networking software, the S1000 is easy to install with virtually no wiring, and will operate for years on AAA or rechargeable batteries. The wireless autopilot is also easy to learn and operate. From anywhere on the boat, users can select to steer a straight course, go direct to a waypoint, or choose one of the programmed fishing or trolling patterns, as well as monitor their marine electronics.

The S1000 utilizes Raymarines SmartSteer programming which provides an intelligent rate of turn relative to boat speed, enabling an angler to confidently spend time away from the helm without worrying about sudden course changes. While trolling, the autopilot can follow a straighter course for better fuel economy and can execute controlled turns.
