1) Motor inventor, pioneer, dies at 98

George Martin, a South Bend, MI native who gained fame among outboard motor enthusiasts for inventing a new type of motor in 1942, died Tuesday in Brighton, Mich. He was 98.

Until Martin's invention, all outboard motors used reed valves for mixing fuel, but Martin conceived a two-cycle motor that incorporated a poppet valve. The result was a "revolutionary" engine that could idle more slowly than anything else on the market. That meant that for the first time you could speed along and troll for fish with the same motor.

Martin's novel engine, patented in 1942, contained 17 different patents, but he initially struggled to get it produced. He took his idea to Mercury Marine, one of the dominant players in the outboard industry, but was rejected. In 1943 he approached the National Pressure Cooker Co., and three years later the company formed a Martin Motors Division that started making the 7.2-horsepower Martin 60 in Eau Claire, Wis.

Martin had a lifelong love affair with speed. In the 1920s and '30s he earned a living racing hydroplane boats on the St. Joseph River. At age 82, while a consultant for Mazda Motors' Wankel racing engines, he became the first man older than age 80 to drive a car, his own largely stock Mazda RX-7, 111 mph at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The feat drew coverage from ESPN and USA Today.

3) Mercury Marine could gain access to more boats

Mercury Marine Inc. could benefit from a $51 million acquisition of two South Carolina boat companies by its parent, Brunswick Corp. The deal announced Tuesday could give the Fond du Lac outboard engine company more access to saltwater fishing boats made by Sea Pro Boats Inc. and Sea Boss Boats LLC, both of Newberry, S.C. Brunswick, of Lake Forest, Ill., has bought the two sister companies that had combined sales of about $80 million in 2004.

Sea Pro and Sea Boss boats will join Brunswicks Boston Whaler division to form a new saltwater boat group based in Edgewater, Fla. Recreational saltwater boats are one of the fastest-growing segments of the marine industry, said Brunswick spokesman Dan Kubera. Earlier this year, Brunswick became the worlds largest producer of recreational boats when it paid $191 million for Crestliner, Lowe and Lund aluminum boat brands. That sale gave Mercury a platform for selling tens of thousands of outboard engines on boats ranging in size from 10 to 25 feet in length, potentially increasing the companys market share at the expense of competitors.

4) Madison boat racing movie finally has silver screen date er

The race to bring the independent film, Madison, to the silver screen will apparently reach the finish line this spring when the movie shot on location in Madison in 1999 will be released to theaters across the Midwest on April 22.

Madison, directed by former Hoosier William Bindley and staring James Caviezel, is based on Jim McCormick, who piloted the Miss Madison hydroplane to the 1971 American Power Boat Racing Gold Cup right here in Madison. The film, which also stars Jake Lloyd, Mary McCormack and Bruce Dern as well as a veteran cast of character actors and local residents who served as extras in several scenes, has now been contracted to MGM and is firmly slated for the April 22 release date. Trailers should be released at the beginning of February.

Note: The articles presented in TBPNews are edited excerpts from the "Secrets of Tunnel Boat Design" book, by Jim Russell, published by AeroMarine Research. The STBD book explains the theory in full, and outlines example design calculations, step-by-step. The "Tunnel Boat Design Program", software, does all the force calculations, dynamic force balances at all speeds, and reports the analysis automatically, including complete graphical performance results for any tunnel or modified vee hull design.
