1) Bombardier takes E-TEC up to 250 hp

Bombardier Recreational Products Tuesday unveiled its line of big 200-, 225- and 250-hp Evinrude E-TEC direct-injection 2-stroke outboards at a press preview at the Ralph Evinrude Test Center. BRP expects to roll out a saltwater edition of the big-horsepower V-6 E-TECs; a freshwater version targeted for pontoon, deck and aluminum fishing boats; and high-output models of the 200 and 225 for tournament bass and walleye anglers by November in time for the 2005 model year.

BRP introduced the first of its E-TEC engines last fall. They were two-cylinder 40-, 50- and 60-hp and three-cylinder 75- and 90-hp models. Still to come are E-TEC outboards in 9.9, 15, 25, 30, 100, 135, 150 and 175 hp. Bombardier is touting its E-TEC 2-stroke technology as more than able to challenge head-on its principal outboard competition 4-stroke technology. It says E-TEC is cleaner, lighter, more-efficient, lower-maintenance and as powerful as any existing technology, including 4-stroke. The engine-maker says E-TECs require no scheduled maintenance for three years or 300 recreational hours, including gearcase lube.

2) Former Brunswick CEO Jack F. Reichert dies at age 73

Tuesday May 11, 2004 - LAKE FOREST, Ill. Jack F. Reichert, retired chairman and CEO of Brunswick Corp., died May 9 at the age of 73. He rose to become the division's vice president of marketing in 1967, was named vice president of Brunswick's Mercury Marine division in 1971, and was appointed president of that division the following year. 3) Gillman Claims First Victory at the UIM F1 Grand Prix of Portugal

Portimao, Portugal, May 16, 2004 - An ecstatic Scott Gillman won his first Grand Prix of Portugal today - finally putting an end to his run of bad luck at this course. Strong winds prevailed from start to finish presenting difficulties for even the top racers of the F1 Powerboat Championship. Pole position winner Massimo Roggiero from Team Green was quickly overtaken by team mate Laith Pharaon during the 1st lap. Eight times World Champion Guido Cappellini starting from a disadvantaged 21st position accelerated to 9th position within the first two laps.

Disaster struck at the 7th corner - Finnish Sami Selio suffered a disappointing collision on lap 9 with Massimo Roggiero, putting him out of the race. Rough winds at Corner 7 again proved challenging and caused Rainbow Corona's Pierre Lundin to barrel roll and dramatically write off his boat. Determined to win, Gillman showed his skill in the rough conditions and by lap 42 had snatched the lead from Comparato with a lap of 0.53.99. Hard on Comparato's heels Italian Cantando and current leader in the world championship quickly moved to 2nd place where he held his ground until the finish. Despite being a winner here for 5 consecutive races, Cappellini was not able to add another win to his list. Finishing in 4th and narrowly missing out on the podium finish, he nevertheless managed to secure 9 championship points, an impressive achievement having started the race from 21st position.

5) Boating deaths rise in California

Sixty-one people were killed in boating accidents in California last year a 15% increase over the 2002 figure but still well below the peak period in the early 1980s when the toll twice exceeded 100. The figures are contained in the annual boating safety report of the California Department of Boating and Waterways, issued last week. The report shows a total of 963 accidents reported the highest number on record. They resulted in 502 injuries in addition to the 61 fatalities, and more than $3.8 million in property damage. That compares to 2002 figures of 911 accidents, 468 injuries, 53 fatalities and $3.7 million in damage, the department said.

The most frequently listed causes of accidents were operator inattention (40 percent), operator inexperience (33 percent) and excessive speed (25 percent). The department points out that an accident can have more than one attributable cause. Fatal accidents involving personal watercraft increased from seven in 2002 to 12 in 2003, the highest number on record. A third of those PWC fatalities involved horseplay activities, the department said, and most operators involved were in the 11 to 20 age group.

Note: The articles presented in TBPNews are edited excerpts from the "Secrets of Tunnel Boat Design" book, by Jim Russell, published by AeroMarine Research. The STBD book explains the theory in full, and outlines example design calculations, step-by-step. The "Tunnel Boat Design Program", software, does all the force calculations, dynamic force balances at all speeds, and reports the analysis automatically, including complete graphical performance results for any tunnel or modified vee hull design.
