1) Gillman wins UIM F1 Powerboat Championship of Saudi Arabia

Twenty three Formula 1 Powerboats lined up against a spectacular beach backdrop today for the start of the UIM F1 Powerboat Championship of Saudi Arabia. Two boats collided on the second lap forcing Moreschi Massimilliano from the Italian Singha team to retire and Pertti Leppala from Team DanIta to place last at the restart. Breathtakingly fast from the outset, Scott Gillman from the Emirates team led the pack clearing at least a six second advantage in front of his closest rivals. Chasing hard was, eight times World Champion, Guido Cappellini making waves for Cantando and Selio who struggled to pass.

A damaged buoy forced the yellow flag and boats to slow down after 25 laps allowing the gap to be closed between Gillman and his main threats. Eleven laps later the green flag signalled safe racing conditions. Little did Gillman's competitors know but he had sliced part of his propeller on lap 15 causing major vibrations to his boat. Gillman managed to hang on to the lead, unaware of the battle taking place behind him. Cantando realised his moment and finally overcame Cappellini's somewhat frustrating yet skilful tactics, propelling him into second place and now chasing hard for first position.

With just 2 laps to go and a 1.20 second lead, Finnish Sami Selio managed to move past Cappellini into the third position. With the chequered flag getting closer, Gillman 'put his foot down' and hung on to the lead by a mere 1.01 seconds heralding another win for this legendary driver - his fifteenth over 8 consecutive years of racing.

2) Two cited for cracking boat theft case

Jacqueline Hayes of Seaworthy Insurance in Alexandria, Va., and Edwin Sparkman of the National Insurance Crime Bureau in Chicago have been named 2004 Marine Investigators of The Year for their work leading to the recovery of a stolen 24-foot powerboat. The award was presented at the recent annual conference of the International Association of Marine Investigators in West Palm Beach, Fla. Hayes was handling a boat insurance application and noted a discrepancy in the hull identification number. She reported it to NICB, where Sparkman determined the boat had been reported stolen five years earlier. The individual who had applied for the insurance now is awaiting trial on one count of receiving stolen property and one count of trafficking in stolen property. IAMI is devoted solely to training in marine theft investigation.

3) Mercury Racing teams with Superleague

Mercury Racing is supporting the Powerboat Superleague as a Championship Choice sponsor for the series 2004 Formula Two Class racing season. The program offers a $5,000 cash payout for Formula Two teams. In addition, Mercury Racing will support selected 2004 Powerboat Superleague events on-site, with the Mercury Racing outboard support truck and personnel. "Increasing brand identity is an important part of any sponsorship, Rick Mackie, senior marketing manager for Mercury Racing, said in a statement. Reaching new consumers through Superleague racing venues and giving our local dealers access to those potential new customers is one of the key aspects of the sponsorship. We see this as a win-win opportunity for everyone.

Note: The articles presented in TBPNews are edited excerpts from the "Secrets of Tunnel Boat Design" book, by Jim Russell, published by AeroMarine Research. The STBD book explains the theory in full, and outlines example design calculations, step-by-step. The "Tunnel Boat Design Program", software, does all the force calculations, dynamic force balances at all speeds, and reports the analysis automatically, including complete graphical performance results for any tunnel or modified vee hull design.
