2) Boating fatalities and injuries up in 2002

The United States Coast Guard released its 2002 Boating Accident Reporting Data (BARD), citing an increase in registered recreational boats and a corresponding increase in boating fatalities. States and jurisdictions reported a total of 13,040,726 registered recreational boats in 2002, compared to 12,876,346 in 2001, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Many of the 750 fatalities and 4,062 serious injuries reported were the result of collisions with other vessels; however capsizing and falls overboard are the most reported types of fatal accidents, the Coast Guard said. According to the report, the overall leading contributing factors to boat injury are "operator inattention, operator inexperience and excessive speed.

Seventy percent of fatalities drowned and 85 percent of drowning victims were not wearing a life jacket. The Coast Guard reported that about 440 lives could have been saved last year if boaters had worn their life jackets. The involvement of alcohol in boating fatalities also is on the rise from 34 percent in 2001 to 39 percent in 2002, according to the Coast Guard report.
Lastly, as in previous years, approximately 80 percent of all reported fatalities occurred on boats where the operator had not received boating safety instruction, stated the Coast Guard.

3) Saddams capture to boost boat sales?

TULSA, Okla. Not only has the capture of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein by the U.S. military this weekend revved up consumer confidence and the stock market, it may ultimately boost boat sales as we head into the 2004 boat show season, suggested MRAA President Phil Keeter. Keeter said he expects the capture to make consumers "less afraid to go out and do the things they want to do," like recreate. And as dealers see more consumers in their showrooms and at boat shows, they may begin ordering more product from boat builders and accessory manufacturers, he added.

The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) also sees the capture as a positive indicator for the boating industry as it heads into a new year. "The capture of Saddam Hussein is tremendous news," said Monita Fontaine, vice president of government relations for NMMA, in an interview yesterday. "Coupled with the economic recovery, all bodes well for a bright future. Our thoughts are with our troops. We hope they come back safely and go boating!"

4) Bombardier unveils boat show promotion

STURTEVANT, Wis. Bombardier Recreational Products is launching a 2004 boat show promotional program for outboard engines through which a total of seven years engine protection or $4 per horsepower will be offered on every new and unused 2003 and 2004 Evinrude outboard engine, the engine builder reported in a statement yesterday. Five years of protection or $4 per horsepower is offered for new and unused 2003 and 2004 Johnson outboards 40 hp and higher. This includes both Johnson 4-stroke and carbureted 2-stroke models, according to Bombardier.

The promotion is only offered in the Continental U.S. and Canada on consumer purchases between December 27 and April 15. Consumers can select an outboard extended protection plan (in addition to the standard limited warranty) or a Credit toward the purchase of a qualified outboard or a rebate check to be sent directly to the consumer.

5) Why is it 'Starboard' and 'Port'?

In the primitive days of navigation, the helmsman stood at the stern of the ship, controlling the vessel's direction by hand with a rudder, which was on the right side and called a steer board - or as the anglo-saxons called it - a "starboard". The left side of the ship is called the "port" side because with the steering mechanism on the right, it was the only side that could be brought to rest against a harbour or port.
