4) BAILEY TAKES THE WIN on F1 Powerboat Tour

Round 2 of the F1 Powerboat Tour was held in Bundaberg on Nov. 2/03 weekend in conjunction with the annual Bundy Thunder Powerboat Festival. In Heat 1 a spectacular accident involving Sydney drivers Jeremy Crook and Shaun Hughes stopped the race. Both drivers were ok but Hughes was taken to the local hospital complaining of back pains and some numbness. Both boats were totally destroyed, the accident happening at approx 170kph (top speeds 220kph).

In the final, Sydney driver, Craig Bailey (#1)got a brilliant start to lead from Coles and Evans with Bricker not far behind. Evans (NEWPORT PAINTS) got by Coles on the tricky right hand bend, almost taking off some paint, to take 2nd and head off after Bailey. Braig Bailey (CRAIG BAILEY MARINE) got a comanding lead early and although Evans got close, was never headed to take out the 20 lapper from Mark Evans (#2) and newcomer Rhys Coles (#14).

Young female driver, Danni Ramage, from Perth had a brilliant drive to get past Brett Atkinson and finish 5th. It is the 2nd race she has competed in and experts are tipping her to be a star of the future. Bailey now leads the series on 99 points from Gavin Bricker on 77 and Mark Evans on 67 points.

5) Rinker Claims First Champ Title

Terry Rinker of Riverview, Fla., had a season every racer dreams of running consistently to the finish and consistently finishing up front. He earned the 2003 title in the Champ Boat Series presented by Mercury Racing with the most dominant results the class has seen in years. Rinker and his Mercury Racing engines completed 300 of the 301 laps in the series' final events this year. Rinker led the series in victories, with two, and finished on the podium in five of six races. Rinker outscored Tim Seebold, the 2002 champion who finished second in the points this time around.

Most of the top ten positions in the points remained up for grabs through the last lap of the season, and the class produced five winners in six races. Rinker was the only repeat victor. Mike Seebold of St. Louis, Mo., finished first in Tampico, Mexico, in May. In June the series staged two races, with Greg Foster of Anaheim Hills, Calif., winning at New Roads, La., and Rinker winning at Bay City, Mich. In August, Rinker won again at St. Louis before Todd Bowden of Monrovia, Calif., won at Windsor, Colo. Jason Campbell scorched the field to take the season finale at San Diego in September. Jason Campbell matched his career-best with a third-place finish in the standings. Chris Fairchild completed his best season in Champ boats by coming in fourth, and Todd Bowden was fifth.
