3) Italian Guido Cappellini wins 7th World Title

LAUSANNE, Switerland: The 21st edition of the U.I.M. F1 World Championship for power boating will be long remembered as a year that Italian Guido Cappellini used his 17 years of experience to steer him to his 7th World Title in his last 10 years of racing. The lead driver of the Zepter Team won all three of the series major awards to take a 'hat trick' of titles by gaining the World Championship points title (130); the Pole Position Championship with 6 poles and 171 points and the Team Championship with a dominating total of 203 points.

Cappellini, never the fastest in race conditions, put himself in position to win the title during the first half of the year by winning 5 of the series first 6 events. The story seemed to be always the same, Cappellini would lead, lose the lead, regain the lead watching other drivers move to the front only to have a myriad of problems prove to be too vulnerable to come away with victories at the end of the day.

The key to success for the 43 year-old native of Como was his meticulous preparation, finishing the season with no DNFs because of defective equipment. He has now gone 26 straight races without a mechanical failure a streak that goes back to the 2000 season. Cappellini ended the season a bit unfocused failing to win in the last 4 events including a disqualification in Sharjah for losing his way to a turn on the first lap of the race, while a week later he disqualified himself from the Abu Dhabi event complaining about reduced visibility because of the lowering of the sun. Cappellini is expected in 2003 for his 18th season as he chases his record setting 47th career win and an 8th World Title.

APBA Factory Pro-Series Offshore High Points National and World Champions are awarded the Russell J. Burke Memorial trophy. The historical trophies, taken out of the Kiekhaefer Mercury archives, were first awarded to Mercury racers in the 1970s. The Russell J.
